Hey guys! It's been a little bit since the last video update. Since the last time, I finally caved in and bought Logic Studio, which also meant getting a new Mac.
Previously, we'd been recording these latest songs in Garageband on "The Great White Hope" (aka, the white MacBook we use when we play live).
TGWH didn't really have the processing power, nor the hard drive space to handle Logic, so a new machine had to be bought. A little dent in the wallet, but definitely needed to be done. We should have never been using the same machine we use live to record with anyway. Not to mention that Logic is a HUGE upgrade from Garageband.
Still learning everything Logic has to offer, and I've had exposure to it when we were recording "The Manual" and "Beautiful Chaos" with our friend JoeRock, but I was more of an onlooker in those situations. Now it's hands on. I've spent most of the time really experimenting with guitar sounds/tones, as we record everything "direct." For the non-musicians out there, that means we aren't pluggin into our amps and then recording them via a microphone. We plug the guitar directly into an audio interface (the Apogee ONE - see pic below) and then alter the distortion/effects directly on the computer.

We had been using the Guitar Rig 4 plugin for distortions and amp emulation, but Logic also offers some good sounds...especially for layering rhythm tracks.
In this video, I'm recording part of the lead guitars for a new song entitled "Self-Fulfilling Prophecy"- It's definitely the most riff-oriented song we've done to date, and personally my fave in terms of guitars. It's got just a hint of metal to it, which is new to our sound. Always cool to bring something new into the mix.
This is also the first time I've used a capo since....well, pretty much since I picked up the guitar over 12 years ago. Also - the guitars are tuned down a full step, which is something likely to continue on future tracks to give that fat rhythm sound.
We've also been working on a new cover, but you won't see any videos for that, since we are keeping it under wraps for now. I don't even think Al knows what it is yet!
